Lyman Allyn Art Museum holds a permanent collection of more than 10,000 paintings, prints and furnishings, with strongly representative holdings of 18th and 19th century American painted works and decorative art pieces as well as European artwork dating from the Renaissance through the 1800s. The traditional furniture of upper class New England families in the 1700s gives visitors a taste of the styles once popular with the area's rich, and traveling exhibitions display art in various styles drawn from traditions begun all around the world. Housed in a magnificent Neoclassical building designed by architect Charles Platt, the museum sits west of the Thames River on the southern edge of Connecticut College, near the United States Coast Guard Academy campus.
