New London's Coast Guard Museum preserves and interprets the organization's rich local history. Visitors can view such sea-faring memorabilia as a hand held oil lantern, an antique quadrant that was manufactured in the 1830s, and a bevy of medals, posters, paintings, and models of historic coast guard vessels. The museum lies on the grounds of the Coast Guard Academy itself, about five minutes' drive from the Long Island Ferry Terminal.
